The interest in green building and sustainable concepts has grown considerably in the residential and commercial market.  When natural disasters and global problems are being linked to our carbon footprint, people are starting to feel responsible for their decisions that impact the environment.  With this realization, the way homes and buildings are being designed and constructed is changing.  Taking advantage of renewable energy, reusing, recycling, and reducing energy consumption helps to direct our energies in positive ways.

 

             Every item being advertised today says it’s green and good for the environment.  I am always being asked “what is green building”, and “do I want my project to be LEED certified?”  We all want to do what’s right for ourselves, our families, our community, and our planet.  If we build the next home or building with green concepts in mind, will the ozone layer return?  Will the hurricanes stop? Will the icecaps stop melting?  I can’t promise that, but we are doing what we can to slow down the destructive process by decreasing the impact of our existence. 

 

             To help increase the number of homes and buildings being built that incorporate sustainable and green concepts, there are many new incentives being offered.  There are new government incentives to aid in changing the way we build.  Local utilities, such as EWEB, offer many options that can help ease the cost of going green.  The return on investment may not be immediate but will pay for itself within a short time and then becomes an additional income.
